Bear Each Other’s Burdens

Burdens
Read:  Numbers 11:16 – 17, TLB
Focus:  vv. 16 & 17, TLB

Then the Lord said to Moses, “Summon before me seventy of the leaders of Israel; bring them to the Tabernacle, to stand there with you. I will come down and talk with you there and I will take of the Spirit which is on you and will put it upon them also; they shall bear the burden of the people along with you, so that you will not have the task alone.

Moses had a difficult job carrying out God’s mandate to lead His people out of bondage and into freedom. The Israelites were a complaining and rebellious bunch but they were God’s people and it was His desire to settle them in their own land and make them a holy nation, giving glory to Him. In this passage, Moses has been stressed out and is losing patience with their childish and ungrateful behavior. He is questioning God and letting Him know that he is at the end of his rope!

I think we can all sympathize with him. Sometimes OUR load seems too heavy to bear and we wonder if we will make it. Our loved one is sick unto death, or our marriage is unbearable, or we need a job and can’t find one. Maybe a long-held dream of ours has come crashing down and we are left in tears and confusion. You are not alone if this is you. This world is full of pain and trouble and we all need some help along the way.

In verse 16 the Lord lets Moses know that he hears and understands, and He sets forth a solution. God tells him to gather the leaders of Israel, seventy of them, and stand with them before Him at the Tabernacle. The next verse brings tears to my eyes and joy to my heart when He says, “. . . I will take of the Spirit which is on you and will put it upon them also; they shall bear the burden of the people along with you, so that you will not have the task alone.” This is so exciting and so like our God! He takes our burdens upon Himself, and He also puts some of the pain on your friends and family, so that you don’t have to carry the load alone!

Several times, just in the past week, we have been given the privilege of sharing the heartache and worry that some of our friends are bent low under. In seeing the answers to these prayers, and in seeing their gratitude for our love, I can’t help but thank God for His plan and letting us share in it! He has promised that he will never leave us alone – He bears our burdens and we bear each other’s burdens, making this journey here just a little easier.
