Read: Proverbs 18:16
Focus: vs 16
“A man’s gift makes room for him and brings him before the great.”
I read a story recently of a dog that had been left on the road by his owner. It was a sad story involving a dog owner who drove to a far-a-way place and left his dog to fend for himself. But the dog just sat there waiting for his owner to come back for him. After three days a local animal rescue group heard about this poor dog and went to out to look for him. They found him at the same place still waiting for his owner to come back. They couldn’t get him to leave and he wouldn’t let them corral him for fear that his owner would come and he would miss him. They eventually got close enough to win his trust by offering small morsels of food. It took a few hours but those little gifts eventually allowed them to take the dog home, feed him, check him over and find a new home for him. Today this dog is living a happy life with owners who love him.
Sometimes trust is hard to win and I’m not just talking about an abandoned dog. People are like this, too and the proverb we read a moment ago illustrates this point perfectly. We’ve been talking about serving God by serving others this Advent season as God wants us to “Be the Gift” he is giving to those around us. When you do something good for another, it is like giving a gift that can open the door of trust and allow God to offer an even great gift.
Giving a gift is a great way to show someone you care about them. I love giving gifts to my family just to let them know I love them but they already know and trust me. When I serve someone I get to show them that I love them and that opens the door so I can tell them that God loves them even more than I do.
In this hard world it won’t take you long to find people who have their guard up so high that you can’t really talk to them. They don’t trust you. This is where good works, the purpose Christ has given you, can open the door. You never know when a simple act of kindness will give you the opportunity to talk about God’s love and Jesus, the greatest gift of all. So make it a habit in your life open the doors of trust around you be simply serving them in the love of Jesus.
