Read: Matthew 6:11 & Proverbs 30:7-8
Focus: vss 11 (Matthew 6) & 7-8 (Proverbs 30)
“Give us our food again, today, as usual . . .”
“O God, I beg two favors from you before I die: first, help me never to tell a lie. Second, give me neither poverty nor riches! Give me just enough to satisfy my needs.”
One of my favorite verses has long been Proverbs 30:7-8. Our verse from Matthew 6 carries those thoughts just a bit further. It reminds us that all we really need is our daily bread and daily necessities, but that God wants us to ask Him for these. As He answers these prayers, we are able to grow in trust and are kept from pride and self-indulgence, since we know that all of these things come from Him – not ourselves. He is a good and benevolent God and has not left us alone here on planet earth to fend for ourselves.
This gift of provision for our basic needs also serves as an example of what our response should be: because He cares and provides, so also should we care and provide for those around us. We have been given much and have the privilege of giving much – passing it on from God to others, so to speak. What opportunities will you have in the coming months to show God’s love? Can you do it joyfully and generously? Ask God to give through you – He loves to do that! And the result will be a song in your heart – and in someone else’s heart, too!
