Making the Right Choices – Tuesday (12/2/14)

Advent-Logo“. . . you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil” (Genesis 2:17a).

Life is full of choices. Do you go right or left? Do you slow down or speed up? Do you want Coke or Pepsi? Do you want fries with that? While most choices don’t have much consequence there are some that are more important than others. Is this the one I should marry? Should I apologize for what I said or did? Should I accept Jesus into my heart? Life is made up of choices. Some things we can do and some we should not do. God gave Adam and Eve only one choice to make. What could be simpler? Just don’t eat from that one tree.

Why is it that if you set someone down next to a shiny button and tell them not to push it, they agonize over that forbidden fruit? They desperately want to push that button! We often talk about reverse psychology when it comes to our kids. Just tell them not to do something and they are sure to do it. Tell them something you want them to do and they will do the opposite. So the idea is to tell them the opposite of what you want them to do in hopes that they will defy you and make the choice you really want them to make.

Adam and Even couldn’t stay away from that tree. It was a temptation. In the book of James the author tells us we are tempted when we are enticed by our own desires. It’s a neat way of saying that there is something within us that responds to temptations around us – something entirely too natural these days. But God wants us to make better choices. He wants us to resist temptation and follow His perfect way.

Yes, life is full of choices. What kinds of choices are you making in life? The power of God is just a prayer away. Let God help you make good choices for Him.

Prayer: Dear God of the universe, help me to make the right decisions every day.
